“Highly entertaining stories, told with humour and a sense of irony and pathos.”
Ruskin Bond

Set in Devgarh, a fictional town in north India, the twelve stories in this collection reveal moments of unexpected wonder in ordinary lives. Rich in humour and irony, they explore human follies without losing sight of life’s quiet sorrows.
A medical representative moonlighting as an autorickshaw driver, a self-styled love guru unwittingly engineering his own downfall, a policeman’s unsettling encounter with a journalist aboard a moving bus, a tipsy railway guard falling off his train, and two salesmen caught between greed and generosity—these are just some of the unforgettable characters who inhabit Devgarh. Their lives unfold through tales of tenderness, nostalgia and suspense.
Meticulously plotted and unmistakably cinematic, each story builds towards an unexpected ending whose memory lingers long after the final page is turned. In evocative prose, this collection captures the colour, chaos and character of small-town India.
